Although Safrana lives is England and Marco in New York, it was actually the beautiful Caribbean island of Nevis that was to be where the two first met. Nevis is one of the smallest islands in the Caribbean, but every year thousands of people descend there for the Culturama Festival. This year was particularly special as it was the 40th year of Culturama.
When the festival takes places, the streets are awash with people dancing to the sounds of soca and calypso from the huge speakers that are on the back of lorries. This is against a backdrop of lush tropical landscape, brightly painted buildings and cute bungalows line the narrow streets into the hill side. This was the setting that Marco first saw Safrana amongst the crown, relaxed, happy and smiling enjoying the carnival vibes.
They instantly hit it off and share the same fun, upbeat personality. After the festival finished, they vowed to stay in touch and that they did. Fast forward a few months and Marco proposed – the setting was perfect, in the Botanical Gardens in The Bronx, New York. When Safrana asked me to photograph her engagement I was particularly excited. Not only do I get to travel abroad (which I love) but I also get to capture a very close friend happy and relaxed with her husband-to-be.
The setting of the engagement shoot was in Lower East Side, New York and using my new Fuji Film X100 T.
Safrana you are beautiful!
